About ELLIS
The ELLIS mission is to create a diverse European network that promotes research excellence and advances breakthroughs in AI, as well as a pan-European PhD program to educate the next generation of AI researchers. ELLIS also aims to boost economic growth in Europe by leveraging AI technologies. ELLIS creates working environments for outstanding researchers to enable them to combine cutting-edge research paired with the creation of start-ups and industrial impact. As a stepping-stone towards this goal, in 2019 ELLIS Units across Europe were initiated. These units bring together the best AI researchers at their locations and fulfil a set of criteria to ensure excellence and to be maximally competitive at the international level.

The Oxford ELLIS Unit
The University of Oxford is one of the leading universities in the world, having been in the top three for most of the last decade. Oxford’s research landscape in AI & machine learning spans a broad range of specialisations. ELLIS faculty (Fellows & Scholars) associated with AI & machine learning are spread over multiple departments and research institutes. Oxford has particular strengths in computer vision, probabilistic & Bayesian machine learning, multi-agent systems and reinforcement learning, as well as well-established applications in robotics, finance, health and biology. Beyond the core AI & machine learning research groups lies a wider landscape that includes methodological, theoretical and applied research in physics, mathematics, materials science, zoology, ecology and medicine. Examples of AI impacts in Oxford include societal impacts of AI (for example the Oxford Internet Institute and the Oxford Martin School), philosophical implications (Future of Humanity Institute and the new Schwartzman Centre), biomedical research (Oxford Big Data Institute), materials science (quantum devices and quantum computing) and physics (exoplanet research, SKA & pulsar research and Zooniverse), to name but a few.
